Sodium benzoate is a kind of important fine chemical products, mainly used in pharmaceutical industry, food industry, dyestuff industry, spices, etc., is an important preservative in food industry, used as a preservative in the mosquito-repellent incense, Chinese herbal medicine syrup, used as a corrosion inhibitor in automotive antifreeze, as a mordant in dyeing and printing industry.

Production of sodium benzoate starting from the 1960s, with the development of chemical industry, sodium benzoate production also gradually developed. In 1980, annual output of 3,800 tons to 9,200 tons in 1990, 10-year average annual growth rate of 9.1%.  The annual output of 11600 tons, 1992 to 1992 has risen to 19600 tons, three years of average annual growth rate of 19.1%, which is the fastest growing period of sodium benzoate. After a few years, due to the insufficient domestic demand, at the same time affected by southeast Asia financial crisis, fewer exports, coupled with other factors such as the popularization and application of new products, the effect of sodium benzoate market is sluggish, the decline in output. Sodium benzoate has a wide manufacturers division, production capacity is the largest and most concentrated in Hubei province, followed by the east China area, division, respectively, in the Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai.
Sodium benzoate has inhibition effect on a variety of bacteria, fungi and yeast has inhibitory, therefore, are widely used in the preservation of high acidity fruit, berries, fruit juice, margarine, pickle and other acidic foods.
